34 preamp losing one channel

I have lost output on the right channel of my quad 34. When I toggle the balance lever I get a crackly sound and the music returns intermittently. This led me to believe that the slider was dirty so I opened up the preamp, blew out the dust and cleaned the slider. However, the problem persists.

Has anyone experienced this and does it mean that I need a replacement for the balance slider? Any suggestions welcome.

I've not long ago had the NET Audio 'full upgrade' to my 405-1. I have to admit I was a bit sceptical, but have to say the results are very, very impressive. Absolutely worth it.

I also bought the NET Audio upgrade kit for my Arcam Alpha 5 CD, which again was impressive.

I'm now thinking about the Fidele upgrade to my 34 pre-amp.

RE: Power Amps - Mods & Updates

I recently bought a 405-2 which was only working on one channel. I looked inside and saw that the tops of the two large caps were leaking. I assumed that was causing the problem. I'm no expert on electronics, and thought about replacing them myself, but in the end took the safer route and sent it back to Quad. Anyway it turned out that one of the output transistors had gone, and it was that which was causing the loss on one channel, not the capacitors.

If you just wanted to replace the opamps, net audio sell them for about £2 each. And Quad can supply things like the main capacitors. They also do a kit to convert a 405 to a monoblock.

Thanks for your suggestions. I did consider the kits from Dada in Holland. Although the 405 upgrade kit and the dual mono PSU would cost 189Euros (£129).
After some consideration I am now inclined to simply replace the large capacitors, one of which has failed (there is an eruption on the top near the terminal) in my 405 which is circa 1981.

Obviously it's up to you, but I decided against upgrading my 405. If I want a new amp, I'd rather go out and buy a 909 or 99 power amp. My 405 sounds great, and I see no point in fitting new opamps and capacitors. It might make a difference, but not a huge one. Unless you dislike the sound of your amp, why change it?

Having said that, if you do want to upgrade the opamps and capaitors, dada electronics from the quadrevisionspot do stock everything you need in their ebay shop.

quad 50E amp Buzzing..any ideas for fix?

I have a set of Quad 50E power Amps, which have been used at home for about 6 months perfectly, and now one of them is putting out a buzzing noise.
This noise does not increase as i turn the volume up.
It still amplifies the music etc..but there is a buzz in the background.

I have taken a look inside and can find no loosee solders.

Does anyone have any ideas as to if it may be an "obvious cause" i should check.

Or anyone had similar and can offer advice??

Thanks Clive.

RE: Quad 34 inputs too sensitive?

This is just how it is with the 34/fm4. The output sensitivity on the fm4 is 100mv which matches the 100mv input level of the radio input on the 34. You'll probably find the problem isn't so bad with radio 3. I don't think it's possible to adjust the sensitivities.

The cd input (on the later grey model 34) was altered to 300mv to better match the high output of a cd player. The aux input on earlier models is 100mv. If you've got an earlier model, you can use an attenuated cable to attach a cd player via the aux input, or use the tape input which is set at 300mv.

Quad 34 inputs too sensitive?

Interesting problem with my Quad 34/306 combination.

The music volume is too loud even with the volume control set to minimum. Problem is most pronounced when using the tuner or aux inputs where the volume needs to be set to just 1 (out of a maximum setting of 21) to get 'normal' listening levels, meaning it is not possible to listen to the system at 'low' levels . 'Normal' listening level is achieved with about 4 on the volume control on phono and tape, so is just about usable.

My speakers are vintage Tannoy Cheviots which I know are high sensitivity (i.e. very efficient) so this may be the problem, but it is FAR more pronounced than I would have expected. Is there any way of reducing the sensitivity of the inputs on the 34, or reducing the output of the 306 perhaps? Or is there another way to approach fixing this (apart from by changing to less efficient speakers)?

Thanks, Mike

RE: 99 Power Amp bi-amped v 909 Power Amp

I haven't got any 99 components, but I do have 2 405 power amps. I originally intended to use them bi-amped, but have ended up just using one of them. Firstly, my 11L speakers have a maximum power handling of 150w, and 2x 100w 405s is a bit too much for them IMO. I had one connected to the treble terminals and the other to the bass. A loud click from one speaker when switching off put me off using them both.

Secondly, while the sound was excellent when bi-amped, it's also excellent when just using one of them. If anything the sound is smoother with one power amp. Maybe it depends how much power you need. With 11Ls, a single 100w power amp is probably enough. That's my experience of bi-amping anyway.

99 Power Amp bi-amped v 909 Power Amp

Has anyone any experience of bi-amping with 99 Power Amps and how this compares with 909 on its own.

I currently have 99CD-P2 with 99 Power Amp bi-wired into 11L speakers - but also driving a REL Quake sub-woofer.

On my other systems I have recently changed to bi-amping with significant improvements but I am uncertain whether this would be better step forward with 99 Powers or whether I should go for a 909. I am already aware of the difference between the 99 & 909 on their own but have never heard 99's bi-amoed in comparison.

Musical tastes are classical - mainly opera and large scale choral.
